According to Isna, the final piece of the central tower of the “Sagrada Familia” church located in Barcelona has finally been put in place, and this church has now reached its maximum final height after 144 years have passed since the start of the work.
The upper part of the 17-meter-high steel and glass tetrahedral cross was put into position on Friday at 11 a.m. local time, and the tower dedicated to Jesus Christ was finally completed, the Guardian wrote.
“Sagrada Familia” with a height of 172.5 meters, which “Antoni Gaudi”, the Catalan architect, spent the last period of his life building, is the tallest building in Barcelona and the tallest church in the world.
“Jordi Faoli”, the chief architect of this project, said as the flags of Catalonia and the Vatican were raised:
It was a joyous day, a wonderful day for all the people who made it possible.
A ceremony to mark the completion of this tower, which is the tallest among the 18 towers designed by Gaudi, will be held on the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death.
Despite the installation of the recent piece, the church building is expected to be completed in about a decade with the construction of its impressive south facade.
Still, Friday was an emotional day for a city that has lived with Gaudí’s unfinished work for generations, and while there is still much work to be done, the building is now as special and iconic to Barcelona as the Eiffel Tower is to Paris or the Empire State Building is to New York.
In recent decades, this place looked like an open-air construction workshop where groups of stonemasons and carpenters worked among tourists. It has been about 15 years since the construction of the beautiful interior of “Sagrada Familia” began, and this place has become more like a church than a construction site.
The original design of the Sagrada Familia, which is in the Gothic style, was by the Spanish architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. “Del Villar” withdrew from this project after a short time. Following this incident, “Antonio Gaudi” took charge of it and made many changes in the design of the church. Gaudi was born in the summer of 1852 and later became one of the most famous Catalan architects in history. During his lifetime, he was famous as an architect of unusual buildings with unusual colors. At the age of 31, he took responsibility for the construction of the Sagrada Familia church for the first time, and he continued to build this church until the age of 73, before he died in an accident in 1926. He completed many unique buildings during his lifetime, but spent the last 14 years of his life building the unfinished Sagrada Familia church.
“Gaudi” has designed this building in such a way that the geometric designs have created an oasis of light for this building. Also, in the interior, delicate and tree-like columns that taper towards the ceiling along with colored glass have given the church an impressive effect.
Sagrada Familia is Barcelona’s most important tourist attraction, with around 5 million visitors a year and an annual income of almost €150 million (£131 million), half of which has been spent on construction.
