Peru’s Congress appointed “Jose Maria Balcazar” as the president – Mehr News agency RCO News Agency
According to the Mehr News Agency, quoted by the Associated Press, the Peruvian Congress elected “José María Balcázar”, the lawmaker of this country, as the eighth president in the last decade.
According to this media, “Jose Maria Balcazar” has now replaced another temporary senior official (Jose Jeri) who was previously removed due to corruption charges only 4 months into his presidential term.
He, an 83-year-old former judge representing the leftist Pro Libera party, defeated 3 other candidates with the majority of 130 members of the Legislative Assembly.
The change in Peru’s presidency reflects the political crisis caused by the lack of a legislative majority for its leaders.
On Tuesday, the Congress voted to remove conservative interim president Jose Jeri after 4 months in office.
Peru’s Congress ousted Jose Jerry after only four months in power following a scandal involving secret meetings with a Chinese businessman.
The current Congress, which began its term in 2021, has now impeached 3 heads of state: Pedro Castillo, Dina Bulvarte, and Jose Jerry.
