The defendant in this case, who is facing the charge of “manslaughter due to gross negligence”, is accused of leaving his fiancee in the middle of the storm in the morning hours of January 19, 2025, near the peak and while he was unable to move due to exhaustion, without protective equipment.
The prosecution believes that the defendant was responsible for leading the team due to his higher experience, but with a series of wrong decisions, including starting the climb late and ignoring weather warnings, he caused the disaster.
On the other hand, the defense lawyer dismissed the accusations in the courtroom, calling the incident an “unexpected tragedy” and claiming that both climbers had sufficient preparation, but the victim suddenly lost strength in the last moments of the climb. The images from the surveillance cameras of the mountain show that the accused, after separating from his fiancee, conquered the peak alone and descended from the other side of the mountain to find help.
This case, which has attracted the attention of the world’s mountaineering circles, is supposed to answer the question of where is the line between personal judgment and criminal responsibility for the lives of fellow climbers in high-risk sports. If convicted, the man faces up to three years in prison.
