NASA has postponed a spacewalk that was scheduled to begin today, Thursday (Jan. 8) at around 8:00 a.m. ET due to concerns about the health of one of the astronauts.
According to RCO News Agency, NASA has postponed the spacewalk due to a “medical concern” about an unnamed member of the station.
According to Space, Mike Finke and Zeena Cardman were scheduled to leave the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday at around 8:00 AM EST and begin an extra-vehicular activity (EVA) of about 6.5 hours. But this spacewalk has been postponed.
NASA officials said in a statement Wednesday (Jan. 7) that the agency is monitoring a medical concern about a crew member that developed inside the orbital complex Wednesday afternoon. Due to medical privacy concerns, it is not appropriate for NASA to release further details about this crew member. The situation is stable. NASA will announce more details later, including a new date for the upcoming spacewalk.
When this spacewalk takes place, it will be Cardman’s first and Finke’s 10th.
To date, five American astronauts have completed 10 spacewalks, and the world record for 16 spacewalks is held by Russian cosmonaut Anatoly Soloviev.
Today’s spacewalk was to help prepare one of the International Space Station’s power channels for the future installation of a new solar array.
Once installed, the array will provide additional capability to the orbital laboratory, including critical support for its safe and controlled deorbit.
NASA is also planning another spacewalk this month, which is scheduled to take place on January 15. During that walk, two as-yet-unnamed NASA astronauts will leave the space station to replace a high-definition camera and install “a new navigational aid for visiting spacecraft.”
These two spacewalks this month will be the first spacewalks of 2026.
