At least 40 people died in a fire at a ski resort in Switzerland
At least 40 people have died and more than 100 have been seriously injured in a fire at a ski resort in the Swiss Alps during New Year’s Eve celebrations, officials said on Thursday.
According to RCO News Agency, Frederic Geisler, the police chief of the Valle Canton, described the incident as an “unprecedented tragedy” and warned that the number of victims may increase, as many of the injured are in critical condition.
According to “NBC News“, Geisler said in a press conference: “Right now, the priority is to identify the people who lost their lives.”
According to officials, many of the victims were young, and the dead included Swiss citizens as well as tourists from neighboring countries and elsewhere.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials said at a news conference that they do not believe the incident was caused by an explosion and declined to speculate on whether celebratory sparks may have been the cause.
In this regard, “Béatrice Pilud”, the general prosecutor of Canton Valle, said: “There is no question of any attack at any point.”
