German representative: Mertes has gone mad
Alice Weidel, leader of the Alternative for Germany party, called Chancellor Friedrich Mertes “crazy” after he did not rule out the possibility of the German army participating in the plan to create a “multinational force” for Ukraine.
According to Isna, Weidel wrote on Wednesday in a message on the “X” social network: “Friedrich Mertes is crazy. He already envisions the German army in Ukraine and involved in military operations against Russia. “This irresponsible rhetoric undermines the peace talks and can quickly turn Germany into a warring party.”
According to Tass News agency, Weidel emphasized the need for Germany to recover.
“We will establish a demilitarized zone between the warring parties and, in particular, we will react to Russian violations and attacks,” Mertes said in an interview with German ZDF television on Wednesday.
The comments come amid signs that the United States and European allies are willing to offer NATO-like security guarantees to Kiev as part of a proposed peace deal with Russia.
According to a six-point proposal recently unveiled by European partners, post-war safeguards would include a European-led, US-backed multinational force stationed in Ukraine to bolster the country’s military and help secure its seas and skies.
France, Britain and other countries have indicated their willingness to send troops under the “coalition of the willing,” while German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius reacted more cautiously, saying “key questions about the force’s mandate remain unanswered.”
