According to Mehr news agency, quoted by Shahab news agency, Yahya al-Sarraj, head of the Union of Gaza Municipalities, pointed to the arrival of a new rainfall system in the region, in the shadow of the widespread destruction of infrastructure and the aggravation of the humanitarian crisis, and warned of the serious dangers of the new weather conditions.

He stated that the region has not yet recovered as a result of the past weather conditions and the current weather system doubles the risks for residents and displaced persons.

These statements were made in a situation where the storm and heavy rains last night drowned and scattered hundreds of displaced people’s tents in the west of Gaza City.

Most of the damages caused by strong winds and rain were concentrated in the areas of Shalihat and Tal Elhavi. In this regard, local authorities warned against drowning of tents and shelter centers, especially in low-altitude and densely populated areas, due to the lack of safe shelter and heating devices.

The Gaza official continued that emergency and civil defense teams are working with limited resources to reduce damages and save citizens, but the lack of fuel prevents the operation of machinery and pumping stations and increases the risk of a humanitarian crisis.

The Gaza government has warned about the possible collapse of the damaged buildings in which the displaced people have been forced to live, stressing that these buildings threaten the lives of civilians.

Potential for widespread human loss as a result of weather conditions

On the other hand, the Civil Defense Organization of Gaza warned about the serious consequences of the current weather system on Gaza in the shadow of the almost complete collapse of the service system after the war.

Civil Defense Spokesman Mahmoud Bassal said that the destruction of most of the machinery and equipment by the occupiers and the lack of heavy equipment, pumps and fuel greatly limit the ability to respond to any emergency situation.

Pointing out that the field situation cannot withstand the current weather conditions, he said that the current weather system may lead to widespread human casualties.

Meanwhile, the strong wind and rain put fragile tents and damaged buildings in danger of collapsing at any moment. Also, thousands of families live in low-lying and open areas without protective equipment, which exposes them to the risk of drowning and extreme cold.

Emphasizing that the policy of setting up tents in the current weather conditions is no longer suitable for life, this organization asked the international community and humanitarian organizations to immediately provide safe shelter and protective equipment.
