Washington Post: Trump’s plan for Ukraine is similar to Korea
The Washington Post newspaper, in a part of a note detailing the peace plan of the US President Donald Trump administration for the war in Ukraine, quoted unnamed officials as writing that the creation of a demilitarized zone similar to the buffer zone between the two Koreas is part of this plan.
According to Isna, the US government has presented a controversial plan to create a buffer zone on the front line of Ukraine, similar to the demilitarized zone between North Korea and South Korea.
Ukrainian and American officials disclosed the details of Washington’s proposed peace plan to The Washington Post, telling The Washington Post that part of the plan includes the creation of a demilitarized zone along the ceasefire line from Donetsk province in the northeast to the cities of Zaporizhia and Kherson in the south.
According to this American media, behind this civilian zone there will be a wider zone where heavy weapons will be prohibited. The area will be closely monitored and is similar to the demilitarized zone that separates North and South Korea.
Previously, informed sources said that US Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll, in a meeting with NATO commanders in Kiev after presenting the US peace plan last month, proposed the construction of a “civilian impregnable zone” along the front line in Ukraine after the warring parties agreed on a ceasefire, which angered European officials.
The Korean Demilitarized Zone, which stretches about 160 miles across the Korean peninsula, has become a symbol of stagnant conflict and unresolved hostilities since it was established after the end of the Korean War in 1953.
This uninhabited land in the orbit of 38 degrees, together with the Berlin Wall, which fell 36 years ago, have become one of the most powerful symbols of the Cold War. With artillery stationed on both sides, infiltration tunnels dug into the ground, and warplanes patrolling the skies, Korea’s demilitarized zone looks anything but peaceful. Hundreds of soldiers have been killed over the years as a result of ceasefire violations.
In media interviews in the past, Zelensky has pointed to the Korean demilitarized zone as a model for conflict resolution that Ukraine would be in danger of following.
The front line in Ukraine runs more than 600 miles through the main industrial and agricultural areas in the east and south of the country, and thousands of towns and villages are located around them. “When the front line is this long, a stagnant conflict may always lead to some form of military conflict,” Zelensky said in an interview in March. He recalled that he had explained this to him in February during his controversial meeting with the US President in the Oval Office of the White House. Zelensky said that “when you divide the people like this, there is no peace in those cities.”
Negotiations between the United States and Ukraine continue regarding this peace initiative, which includes handing over some territories to Russia, limiting the number of Ukrainian army personnel, and waiving its desire to join NATO.
Kiev and its supporters in the European Union, who did not play a role in drafting this plan, have refused to consider any concessions to Russia despite the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces in Donbass and other regions.
