Egypt’s emphasis on supporting Lebanon in stopping the Zionists’ aggression – Mehr News Agency | RCO News Agency
According to Mehr news agency, quoted by Al-Nashrah website, in the light of the recent developments in Lebanon, especially the issues related to the appointment of a diplomat from this country as the head of the Lebanese delegation in the mechanism committee (overseeing the implementation of the ceasefire), Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Ati emphasized Cairo’s support for any path that leads to the reduction of tensions.
In a conversation with Lebanon’s LBCL channel, the Egyptian foreign minister said: We support any diplomatic and political path that eliminates the threat of aggression against Lebanon and leads to stability.
He added: There is a ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Tel Aviv that was signed last year and Lebanon has fully adhered to its provisions.
This Egyptian official emphasized: The Lebanese side is completely serious about the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, and we are working with the American side to reduce tensions and focus on the diplomatic path to support the government’s plan.
It is noteworthy that since the past few months, with the direct instigation of the United States, Egypt has entered the Lebanese case, and while it previously proposed a plan to deal with the weapons issue in Lebanon under the title of “Hezbollah not using its weapons”, last week Cairo took a threatening tone against the Lebanese and the Egyptian delegation in Lebanon warned this country that if the demands of the United States and Israel, especially regarding the disarmament of Hezbollah, are not met, a dangerous scenario will be designed against Lebanon.
However, the new statements of the Egyptian foreign minister and his emphasis on supporting Lebanon came after the Lebanese presidency nominated Simon Karam, the country’s former ambassador to the United States, as the head of the Lebanese delegation in the meetings of the committee overseeing the implementation of the ceasefire.
The appointment of a civilian figure as the head of the Lebanese delegation in the meetings of the mentioned committee was accompanied by many side effects, and especially the Zionists tried to advertise it in the framework of normalizing relations.
Lebanese sources reported that the country’s delegation adhered to the principle of not negotiating directly with the enemy in the meeting on Wednesday last week.
The aforementioned sources said: Also, the presence of a civilian figure, namely Simon Karam, in the Lebanese delegation is not a surprising and unexpected issue; Because since last October, the American authorities had announced the agreement of the Lebanese authorities for the presence of civilians in the country’s delegation and the expansion of the work of the committee overseeing the implementation of the ceasefire to technical matters such as the release of Lebanese prisoners and the determination of borders.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that “the meeting resulted in an agreement to formulate ideas for increasing economic cooperation between Lebanon and Israel after the disarmament of Hezbollah.”
In response to Netanyahu’s claims, a prominent Lebanese source in a conversation with al-Juhamurieh newspaper, while condemning these claims, said that no direct political or economic negotiations or steps towards normalizing relations with Tel Aviv were made in the meeting of the mechanism committee, and appointing a civilian head of the Lebanese delegation does not mean giving in to the Zionists’ wishes.
