Berlin: Ukraine may finally face a referendum
A referendum may be in store for post-war Ukraine, Germany’s foreign minister has said, acknowledging that Ukraine will have to make “painful concessions” for peace with Russia.
According to RCO News Agency, German Foreign Minister Johann Waddefoll believes that Ukraine may be forced to make “painful concessions” in an effort to end the war with Russia; A process that can finally end with a referendum.
Vodhful’s statements have been made in the middle of the US-Ukraine consultation about a new peace plan, which includes handing over some territories to Russia, limiting the number of Ukrainian army personnel, and waiving its desire to join NATO.
“This will undoubtedly be an extremely difficult process for Ukraine, which may end with a referendum,” Wadful said in an interview with Germany’s Neue Osnabrücker newspaper.
Referring to Russia’s desire to offer Ukraine significant territorial concessions to Moscow, he said that “the citizens of Ukraine must decide whether they can accept the terms of the end of the war or not.”
The German Foreign Minister emphasized: “The duty of diplomacy is to create compromises that both sides of the conflict can support.” Finally, this process always involves painful concessions.
Johan Wadfull added that because of international diplomatic efforts, the possibility of a ceasefire “has never been greater”.
According to Wadfull, “an important precondition would be for Ukraine to receive guarantees that would ensure it would not be left defenseless against a renewed Russian attack.”
In this regard, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said the other day that three issues cause the most discussions in the peace talks.
Negotiations between the American and Ukrainian delegations were held on the evening of November 30 about the peace plan, which lasted for almost 5 hours. Briefing on the talks, Volodymyr Zelensky said constructive progress had been made in the talks, while the US president again hinted at “an opportunity for an agreement”.
