Europe in response to Trump’s plan for Ukraine: This is not a peace plan at all!
European and Ukrainian officials have described the new 28-point US plan for a ceasefire in Ukraine as “one-sided”, “favored by Moscow” and “a recipe to encourage more Russian attacks” and warn that putting pressure on Kiev instead of Moscow will lead to the spread of war to Europe and even NATO member countries.
According to RCO News Agency, the European and Ukrainian media strongly rejected the new peace plan presented by “Donald Trump” of the US President and considered it “lacking the real elements of peace”. The plan, which is a 28-point roadmap for a cease-fire, according to European officials, in practice includes extensive concessions to Russia and has been interpreted as “Vladimir Putin’s wish list”.
Kaya Callas, the senior diplomat of the European Union, warned the US President’s team in Brussels that no peace plan can succeed without the support of Kiev and European countries – which are now the biggest financial and military supporters of Ukraine. He emphasized: “The pressure should be on the aggressor, not the victim.” “Rewarding aggression only leads to more aggression.”
In this proposed plan, Ukraine must give up the occupied territories in its east, cut its army in half and give up some weapons.
In a private meeting with European ministers in Brussels, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiha said: “It is clear that Russia has dictated the terms of this plan. “No peace plan based on giving concessions to the aggressor can be implemented.”
These developments occur in a situation where Ukraine has been facing more severe bombings and more casualties in recent days, and at the same time, Volodymyr Zelensky’s government is caught in a big corruption scandal. On the other hand, European countries are struggling with internal disputes to provide the weapons and funds needed by Kyiv.
Meanwhile, reports have been published according to which American officials, led by Trump’s special representative Steve Wittkoff, have held talks with the Russian side to revive stalled efforts towards a ceasefire. The complete removal of Europe from the drafting process of this plan has also angered the European authorities.
Kalas confirmed that no European minister was involved in the preparation of this plan and added: “There is no sign of concessions from Russia.” While only a few weeks ago, Trump told Putin that “our talks will never get anywhere,” the new plan actually meets Moscow’s two key demands: handing over the Donbass region and reducing Ukraine’s military power.
European diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity, claimed the plan was a recipe for forcing a “bad deal” on Ukraine. One of these diplomats warned: “If Russia goes down this path, the problem will not be only Ukraine; This means the possibility of more Russian attacks, even against EU and NATO member states.
A senior European official close to the plan’s review process also described it as merely a “list to please Putin” and said that Kiev was under pressure to accept the plan.
After receiving the full version of the plan, the Ukrainian president’s office declined to reject it outright in a statement, but wrote that the text “in its current form” does not bring a “just” peace. This statement emphasized that Kiev announced the principles that are vital for the people of Ukraine to the American side and agreed to try to amend the clauses of the plan.
At the same time, a German official said that German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz is trying to formulate a coordinated response from Europe so that the plan is on a path that guarantees Ukraine’s interests.
This official considered the simultaneous implementation of new US sanctions against Russian oil companies and the increase in the level of Washington’s military consultations with Ukraine as part of the “dual strategy of the United States to put pressure on all parties” and emphasized: “Now Europe must increase its effectiveness by coordinating its actions.”
