Scientists made environmentally friendly building materials with the help of mushrooms. In this process, mushrooms will be a cheap and sustainable alternative to foam, wood and plastic.
According to Tekna technology and technology news service, scientists were able to create green building materials by creating a new method. In the method of the scientists, the molds of mushroom roots are used.
Previously, scientists had conducted experiments with the help of similar composites. In those experiments, it was not possible to apply widely due to growth limitations in high-quality materials. Dr. Jane Scott from Newcastle University and one of the authors of this research says: In this research, the appearance of architectural spaces using mycelium when combined with biological materials was considered.
Currently, engineers and scientists from the Living Text Tiles research group, in collaboration with Newcastle University’s Biotechnology Center, have tried to use knitted templates for the molding framework. In the test of this method, a prototype structure named Bayonite was made, which was in the shape of a dome and was produced in a unified manner without connections. According to Scott, the mechanical performance of this sample used with permanent knitting molds showed good strength against tension, compression and bending.
