Ukrainian President Walodimir Zelksky arrived in Ankara today (Thursday) on the eve of possible peace talks between Russia and Russia, while Russian President Vladimir Putin refused to travel to Turkey, according to Mehr News Agency.
Zelksky is said to be initially meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the Turkish capital.
Zelksky told reporters at the airport that Ukraine had sent a “at the highest level” delegation, including Foreign Minister Andrey Sibia, representatives of the Presidential Palace and all intelligence agencies.
He added: “We need to know what level of the Russian delegation and whether they are able to make decisions alone because we all know who in Russia decides.”
The Kremlin will lead the Russian delegation in Istanbul’s talks. Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galzine, Igor Casticov, head of the Central Office of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, and Russian Defense Minister Alexander Fumin are other members of the delegation.
Putin on May 9 offered to Kiev’s officials to resume indirect negotiations that were abandoned in the spring of the half -time. Ukrainian President Walodimir Zelksky also announced the country’s plans to travel to Türkiye. Earlier, US President Donald Trump had encouraged Ukraine to immediately accept Putin’s offer.
A White House official on May 9 said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump’s Special Envoy in West Asia and US Special Envoy in Ukrainian affairs, will travel to Istanbul.
