EU reaction to US position on the Crimean Peninsula
In response to recent reports, the EU foreign policy chief said “Crimea belongs to Ukraine” and that the United States will make a mistake by recognizing it as part of Russian territory.
“Ukrainian and European authorities will face an immediate US proposal to recognize Crimea as part of Russian territory on Wednesday,” the Washington Post recently quoted several sources as saying.
“Crimea is in Ukraine and belongs to the country,” said EU foreign policy chief Kaya Kalas, in response to the report of the Washington Post.
“The United States will make a mistake by recognizing Crimea as part of Russian territory,” he said in an interview with AFP. “The European Union will never recognize Crimea as Russia.”
“Moscow plays time with a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine on the occasion of Easter,” Kalaz said. “I think the United States has not used its tools to press Moscow.”
“They (the Russian side) did not act on a ceasefire,” the EU’s foreign policy chief said. “It is clear that Russia has launched all these games and does not really want peace.”
The Kaya Calas claim said that Russia, citing Ukrainian UAV attacks, proved that “Kiev had violated the temporary ceasefire”.
At the end of the interview, Calas said: “Russia thinks time is in their favor, but they don’t really show good signs. It was also a temporary trick to stop Trump. “I am also afraid that Trump will stop the Ukrainian war and stop it, but he is still looking for agreements.”
