Grossi’s concern about the escalation of conflicts around Zaporizhia
The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency expressed his concern about the ongoing conflicts surrounding the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.
According to RCO News Agency, “Rafael Grossi”, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, stated that he is worried about the situation of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, because the intensity of military actions near this power plant has increased in recent weeks.
“For nearly three years, we have been doing everything we can to prevent a nuclear accident at the Zaporizhzhia power plant and other parts of Ukraine,” Grossi said in a statement on Thursday. No accidents have occurred, but the situation has not improved and remains dangerous. I remain deeply concerned about nuclear safety and security in Ukraine, including in Zaporizhia. “Our work is not over yet.”
According to the statement, IAEA experts at the Zaporizhia plant have heard repeated explosions outside the site over the past week, again highlighting the ongoing threat to nuclear safety during military conflicts.
“Although the sound of military action near the site has been a regular occurrence since the agency established a permanent presence at the Zaporizhia plant in September 2022, it has occurred almost daily in recent weeks,” the statement continued.
The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, located on the bank of the Dnieper River, is the largest nuclear facility in Europe. The plant came under Russian control in early 2022 and has since been repeatedly attacked by Ukraine, despite security concerns.
