Schultz: Baltic security guaranteed by NATO power/Russia’s secret fleet is the target
Berlin will work with NATO allies to step up surveillance of the Baltic Sea after reports of damage to EU underwater infrastructure, Germany’s chancellor said. He also said NATO discussed targeting Russia’s shadow fleet with sanctions.
According to RCO News Agency, German Chancellor Olaf Schultz said today (Tuesday) on the sidelines of the meeting of the heads of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) member states in Finland, that after the report of damage to the underwater infrastructure of the European Union, Germany will do its best to strengthen the monitoring of the sea. Baltic will participate.
Speaking to reporters, he described the damage as part of a combined war and added: There have been incidents and we must consider that they are part of a combined strategy aimed at threatening European countries. That is why it is now important for us to jointly discuss how to ensure greater security in the Baltic Sea.
According to Novosti News agency, Helsinki will host the meeting of the heads of NATO allies in the Baltic Sea on Tuesday and Wednesday.
About the meeting, Schultz noted that the allies will discuss opportunities for coordination and the creation of joint regulatory structures, as well as legal aspects of handling the presence of vessels in the Baltic Sea that pose a threat to security.
The German chancellor also claimed that Russia was behind a series of incidents that damaged several power and communication cables in December. Meanwhile, Moscow seriously denies these accusations.
The EstLink 2 communication cable between Finland and Estonia became unavailable on December 25. Finnish police suspect that a Cook Islands-flagged oil tanker may have damaged an underwater cable by pulling an anchor from the seabed.
Olaf Schultz further stated that NATO members are looking to target Russia’s shadow fleet in the Baltic Sea through sanctions as part of efforts to protect critical infrastructure in the region.
He went on to say: “We will continue to take action against Russia’s shadow fleet, including with sanctions that have already been imposed and other sanctions that may be imposed later, including sanctions against certain ships and shipping companies that also pose a threat to the environment.” are living
