The foreign minister of Austria temporarily replaced the chancellor
Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg was sworn in as interim chancellor on Friday after the resignation of Karl Nehhammer, the Austrian Chancellor’s Office announced.
According to RCO News Agency, the statement of the Austrian Chancellor’s office states: “After the resignation of the former Federal Chancellor Karl Nehmer on January 10, 2025, the Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen tasked the Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg to manage the Federal Chancellery and continue to lead the interim federal government.
Schallenberg will retain his position as foreign minister.
“It was my honor to serve our country and all of you every day,” Nahamer said in a farewell video message, referring to the past three years as chancellor. “Every day was a challenge.”
Nahamer of the Conservative People’s Party (OVP) said on January 4 that he would step down as chancellor and party leader after failing to form a coalition government.
According to Novosti, Christian Stoker, who took over the temporary leadership of the OVP, said that he is ready to negotiate with the right-wing Freedom Party (FPO). Austrian parliamentary elections were held on September 29. In this election, FPO won a historic victory with 29 percent of votes. The OVP came in second with around 26%, while the centre-left Social Democrats came in third with around 21%.
