The German parliament was dissolved – ISNA
After the German chancellor failed to get a vote of confidence from the country’s parliament, the German president dissolved the lower house (Bundestag) to facilitate elections.
According to RCO News Agency, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier dissolved the country’s parliament today (Friday) to pave the way for early elections on February 23 after the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Schultz’s tripartite coalition.
The German chancellor lost the confidence vote of the parliament earlier this month. This came after MPs from the Free Democrats withdrew, leaving his coalition without a majority.
The vote kicked off the election campaign in earnest, especially with Schultz’s conservative challenger Friedrich Merz, who polls show is likely to replace him and who claims the current administration has imposed excessive regulations and stifled economic growth.
The conservatives are ahead of the Social Democrats by more than 10 points in most polls. The far-right party “Alternative for Germany” has slightly surpassed Schultz’s party.
According to Reuters, although mainstream parties have refused to cooperate with the far-right movement and Alternative for Germany, the presence of this party complicates parliamentary calculations and makes it more difficult to form a coalition.
