According to the professor of the International Research Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering, warning people to leave their homes after major earthquakes is one of the lessons learned from the Bam earthquake, but on the other hand, sustainable development and resilience are among the lessons that were not learned from the Bam earthquake.
According to RCO News Agency, Dr. Mehdi Zare, a professor at the International Research Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering, said at the scientific meeting “21 years after the Bam earthquake: review of experiences and lessons on the occasion of the anniversary of the Bam earthquake”, which was organized by the Iran Science Promotion Association on Instagram live: “The Bam earthquake with Magnificent 6.5 occurred on January 5, 2002, and due to the number of casualties of 30,000 people and 60,000 injured, the bomb issue became a national issue.
Stating that the reconstruction of Bam city lasted 3 years and 9 months, he said: In this earthquake, a third of the city’s population was killed in the earthquake, which included 30 thousand people, but in the census of 2005, this population gap was compensated.
Referring to the effects of this seismic event in the city of Bam, Kerman province, Zare continued: In this event, a generation of Bam seismological researchers was created, meaning that people who were active in other branches of this field turned to seismology after the Bam earthquake. brought and are currently engaged in research work in this field. In addition, we have seen that after the Bam earthquake, people are warned to leave their homes, which is one of the lessons learned from the 1982 Bam earthquake.
This researcher in the field of seismology and earthquake engineering explained in this regard: Earthquakes had occurred in the days and hours before the great Bam earthquake, but there is no evidence to warn people to leave their homes and stay in the roofless space, because in This was not known at that time, due to the lack of announcement of this warning, we have seen that many students lost their lives in the dormitory of Payam Noor University and Azad University, but in the Chalan Cholan earthquake of Lorestan province, while Its magnitude was 6.1 and close to the Bam earthquake, but the casualties were limited to 60 people.
He considered the reason for the decrease in casualties in the Chalan-Cholan earthquake to be the warning for people to leave their homes and continued: “Sustainable development” is one of the most important lessons that were not learned from the Bam earthquake. We are witnessing unstable development in various cities of the country, especially in the centers of the provinces, while 20 million people were added to Iran’s population after the Bam earthquake, and unfortunately, after 21 years of the Bam earthquake, a significant part of the population settled in cities. Besides, 80% of the country’s big cities are developed in the active fault zone.

The professor of the International Research Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering, referring to the Sarpol Zahab earthquake in 2016, said: Our investigation indicates that the buildings built in the new city in the steel area of this city suffered the most damage due to improper and poor quality construction. And these new buildings had little resilience against earthquakes.
He reminded: This happened in the Kahraman Marash earthquake in Turkey, and in the 2023 earthquake, most of the damage occurred in apartments and new structures, and this shows that Iran and Turkey are facing a new phenomenon called newly constructed buildings. In these two countries, there are no more clay and mud structures, but mass constructions have been developed, which do not receive an acceptable grade in terms of resilience against earthquakes.
Zare considered another example of the resilience of mass construction in the Damavand earthquake in Tehran province, where Mehr housing was less resilient than the villas and structures that were built in the past.
