The interventionist statements of the EU foreign policy official about Syria
Kaya Kalas said in an interventionist statement about the future of Syria: “Iran and Russia should not play a role in the future of Syria, and Russia’s withdrawal from Syria should be a condition for any negotiations between Syria and Brussels.”
According to RCO News Agency, “Kaya Callas”, the foreign policy officer of the European Union, said on Monday evening that she believes that “Iran and Russia should not play a role in the future of Syria”, but the European Union should become the main helper to the new authorities in Damascus.
In a press conference after the meeting of EU foreign ministers, the European Union’s foreign policy official said that the withdrawal of Russian bases should be a condition of the EU’s dialogue with the new Syrian authorities.
“We have to make a bet to talk to the Syrian authorities and declare that they have to get rid of the Russian bases,” Kalas said.
According to him, this issue was “discussed by EU foreign ministers” and “many spoke in favor of this position.”
He promised to convey this view to the new Syrian authorities during future diplomatic contacts.
Callas noted that the EU ambassador, who has been in Beirut until now, will be in charge of building EU relations with the new Syrian authorities. Referring to the difficult situation in Syria, he said: “He has already gone to Damascus.” “(His) duty is to be in contact with the new Syrian authorities to understand all the current issues and developments.”
According to him, the European Union expects the new Damascus authorities to “respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Syria, create an inclusive government and support the rights of women and minorities, including religious rights.”
Callas added: “The European Union plans to hold the ninth international conference of donors to Syria in early 2025 in Brussels.”
The armed opposition in Syria took control of Damascus on the morning of Sunday 18 December (December 8), and after that, the Syrian army command announced the fall of Bashar Assad’s government in a statement.
In this regard, “Mohammed al-Bashir”, who was appointed as the head of Syria’s transitional period last Monday, officially assumed the presidency of the country’s transitional government until next March.
Some Syrian opposition groups, such as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, are on the list of terrorist organizations of the European Union. According to Kalas, after reviewing the performance of the Syrian authorities, a decision will be made on the next steps of Brussels, including the possible removal of these groups from the list of terrorist organizations.
