China’s reaction to sending American tanks to Taiwan
Referring to the delivery of American tanks to Taiwan, the spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry asked Washington to end its arms support to this self-governing island and not to support the currents that seek the island’s independence from China.
According to RCO News Agency, following the delivery of the first shipment of American Abrams tanks to Taiwan, Lin Jian, the spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, asked the United States to refrain from arming Taiwan and adhere to the one China policy.
Taiwanese media announced that a shipment of 38 M1A2T Abrams tanks arrived at the port of Taipei on Sunday evening local time.
The spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry said about the delivery of these tanks to Taiwan: “China’s position is firm and clear in opposing the military relations between the United States and Taiwan, as well as the sale of American weapons to Taiwan.”
He also asked the United States to adhere to the One China policy, saying: “We ask the United States to stop arming Taiwan and stop supporting the forces that seek Taiwan’s independence by force.”
In 2019, Washington approved a $2.2 billion deal to sell 108 Abrams tanks to Taiwan to boost Taiwan’s defense along the island’s northern coast. Taiwan plans to receive another 42 tanks in 2025, with the remaining 28 scheduled to arrive in 2026.
Taiwan is a self-governing island that China considers part of its territory and military attack is one of the ways to take it back.
