Türkiye is negotiating with the Trump administration about the purchase of F-35
Turkey’s Defense Minister said that Ankara may discuss the purchase of F-35 fighter jets with the new US government, but Ankara’s position on the Russian S-400s has not changed.
According to RCO News Agency, Turkish Defense Minister Yashar Güler said on Sunday: “We have already shown our desire to buy F-35. We believe that the positive atmosphere of buying F-16 will affect the process of buying F-35. We will also negotiate with the incoming US administration on the possibility of lifting sanctions that are against the spirit of our alliance. “Also, our position regarding the S-400 remains unchanged.”
Turkish Defense Minister also stated that Turkish officers are planning to inspect 2 Eurofighter jets arriving in Ankara next week.
Güler told the “Star” newspaper: “The process and technical negotiations for the purchase of 40 F-16 fighter planes are continuing. Negotiations on Eurofighter jets are also making positive progress. 2 British Eurofighters are participating in military exercises in Qatar and will arrive in Ankara on December 18, and we will then have the opportunity to inspect them.”
Türkiye plans to buy 40 Typhoon jets from Eurofighter. Last year, Türkiye first negotiated the purchase with Britain and Spain, and then sought help from London to convince Germany.
In 2017, Türkiye signed a contract with Russia to supply a set of S-400 air defense systems, which it received in 2019.
After that, the United States asked Turkey to give up the Russian systems for the American-made Patriots, and when Ankara refused, Washington exempted it from the program to supply the last F-35 fighters and under the CAATSA law, defense officials sanctioned Turkey. CATSA is the “Countering America’s Enemies Through Sanctions” Act.
Also, the United States canceled the joint F-35 memorandum with Turkey and signed it with the remaining seven partners in the F-35 project, including the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, Denmark, Canada and Norway.
