Reuters: Iran and the Europeans are testing diplomacy on the eve of the new Trump era
British media wrote in a report that Iranian and European diplomats met on Friday to discuss the possibility of holding serious negotiations, including regarding Iran’s nuclear program, before Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
According to RCO News Agency, these talks were held in Geneva and are considered the first set of talks after the US presidential election.
A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran expects these talks to be “tough and serious”.
He added that Tehran will inform Russia and China about these talks next week.
US President-elect Donald Trump, who in his previous term withdrew from the JCPOA nuclear agreement and followed the policy of “maximum pressure” against Iran, is choosing a team for his new administration that includes famous people with strict positions against Iran. It is Iran.
Majid Takht Ravanchi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, met with Enrique Mora, the deputy head of foreign policy of the European Union, on Thursday evening, and on Friday, he discussed the senior diplomats of the European Troika.
Mora described the exchange as “frank” and said that the focus of the talks was on Iran’s support for Russia, the situation in the Middle East and the nuclear issue.
A senior Iranian official also stated that these three issues are “related to each other”.
Four European diplomats said that despite Trump’s return to power leaving many questions unanswered, the three European countries (Britain, France and Germany) felt they had to act now because time was running out.
A senior Iranian official has said in this regard: “If we can reach an agreement with France, England and Germany on a road map to resolve the nuclear disputes, then the ball will be in America’s court to revive or destroy the 2015 agreement.” »
A European official also said that the main purpose of these talks is to consider a timeline and a framework for the start of negotiations so that there is a clear commitment to start concrete talks before Trump takes office.
