As the capital of the Ottoman Empire, Istanbul was considered one of the major commercial and economic centers in these years. This city experienced great political and social changes between 1870 and 1920; including modernization and political developments that ultimately led to the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye.
