The leader of the Nationalist Party of Türkiye proposed the extension of Erdogan’s presidency
A political ally of the Turkish president said a constitutional amendment should be considered to allow the president to run again in 2028.
According to RCO News Agency, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will serve his last term after his re-election last year, unless the parliament calls early elections according to the constitution. He has been running Turkey for more than 21 years, first as the prime minister and then as the president.
According to the Reuters News agency, Dolat Baghçeli, the leader of the Nationalist Party of Turkey and a political ally of Erdogan, said: “If terrorism is eradicated and inflation is dealt a heavy blow and Turkey guarantees political and economic stability, is the re-election of our president a natural choice and Isn’t that right?”
Addressing the lawmakers of his party, he said during a speech in parliament: “Constitutional amendment should be considered to ensure Erdogan’s ability to run again in the presidential elections.”
Changing the Turkish constitution will be put to a referendum if 360 lawmakers in the 600-seat parliament support it. Also, holding early elections requires the support of 360 legislators.
