What is early voting in the US election?
In this report, we have taken a look at the process of early voting and postal voting in the United States, which has been welcomed by voters in this year’s presidential elections.
According to RCO News Agency, early voting in the American elections is underway and the competition between “Donald Trump” and “Kamala Harris” candidates of the Republican and Democratic parties is so tight that nearly 70 million Americans have participated in this early voting so far.
According to the Guardian newspaper, in many states of the country, the number of people participating in early voting was unprecedented. For example, more than 97,000 citizens of Wisconsin cast their votes on the first day of early voting. Even in North Carolina, which was hit by a hurricane a few weeks earlier, on October 18, more than 353 thousand voters cast their ballots.
Early voting gives citizens the opportunity to avoid long lines on Election Day and avoid unpredictable factors such as inclement weather.
Except for the states of Mississippi, New Hampshire, and Alabama, residents of other US states can cast their vote early within a specific time frame that varies by state.
In some states, the counting of these votes begins at the same time as the official election begins (on November 5 or November 15 this year), but in some precincts, the early voting booths do not open until the end of voting and the closing of the precinct.
Also, in some US states, voters have the opportunity to deliver their ballots using postal systems. Some states require a valid reason to vote by mail, but in others officials send mail-in ballots to all registered voters. Additionally, US citizens overseas as well as US military personnel will receive mail-in ballots prior to the election and will vote by mail.
The Guardian claims that the security of postal voting in the United States is very high, with fewer than 500 cases of fraud in this type of voting from 2000 to 2012. However, many election officials are concerned that postal delays will cause eligible voters’ ballots to reach election officials after the counting deadline.
