Pashinyan and Blinken’s consultation about Yerevan-Baku peace
Armenian media reported that the Prime Minister of this country had a telephone conversation with the US Secretary of State.
According to Isna, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and American Prime Minister Anthony Blinken had a phone call today (Thursday).
Armenpress News agency published this article and wrote: “During this call, issues related to the peace process between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan and the agenda of Yerevan-Washington bilateral relations were discussed.”
In July, Blinken hosted talks between Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and his counterpart from the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeihun Bayramov, in Washington on the sidelines of the NATO summit on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of this organization.
After these negotiations, the foreign ministers of the two countries committed to continue the talks for the final peace agreement by issuing a statement.
Blinken and the US State Department have pressed Yerevan and Baku to quickly sign a peace accord, saying in June that the US expected Armenia and Azerbaijan to make “hard compromises” to finally sign a peace agreement between the two countries.
“There is a unique opportunity to implement a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan that will end years of conflict,” Blinken said in a speech at the Brookings Institution in Washington in July, according to the US State Department.
He said such an agreement “creates tremendous opportunities for economic interaction and economic growth in the region and connects the countries of the East and West and North and South.” “Azerbaijan plays an important role in this issue.”
US diplomats have touted the potential economic benefits of a peace deal, and US Deputy Secretary of State James O’Brien has said the unresolved conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan is the only obstacle to unprecedented trade and commerce between Central Asia and the West.
Armenia insists that an agreement be signed with the Republic of Azerbaijan, which includes the agreed articles, but the Republic of Azerbaijan does not accept such a thing and has demanded the resolution of all issues. Both sides believe that in the constitution of each of these countries, there are territorial claims regarding each other, and Baku emphasizes that this issue should be resolved first.
