The Blue Origin space company, led by Jeff Bezos, is on the verge of its eighth manned space mission. The mission, known as NS-26, is scheduled for Thursday, August 29, 2024.
According to Tekna Technology Media Astronomy News Service, one of the highlights of this mission is the presence of Carson Kitchen, a 21-year-old student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as a crew member. By making this flight, Kitchen will make her name in the history of spaceflight as the youngest woman to cross the Carmen Line. The Carmen line, approximately 100 km above sea level, is commonly known as the boundary between the Earth’s atmosphere and outer space. In addition to Carson Kitchen, five other people will participate in this mission: Nikolina Elric (philanthropist and entrepreneur), Rob Ferrell (university professor), Eugene Green (entrepreneur), Iman Jahangir (Iranian cardiologist) and Efraim Rabin (entrepreneur). .
The New Shepard spacecraft, a reusable suborbital launch system, will launch from Blue Origin Space Station in West Texas. The launch of this mission will be broadcast live from 9:00 AM ET (13:00 GMT).
It should be noted that although the Carmen line is known as the boundary between the Earth’s atmosphere and space, NASA and the US military have different definitions of an astronaut. According to these organizations, every person who reaches an altitude of 80 km above sea level is eligible to receive an astronaut badge. Previously, 18-year-old Anastasia Mears was known as the youngest female astronaut by flying on the Virgin Galactic spacecraft.
The NS-26 mission shows that space tourism is developing rapidly and that people from different backgrounds are getting the opportunity to experience space travel. Also, this mission shows that private companies play an important role in the development of the space industry.
