Types of high schools in Canada
Canadian high schools are divided into two general categories:
- Public high schools
- Private high schools
In the following, we provide you with more information about each of these two types of high schools in Canada and their structure.
1. Public high schools in Canada
Public, publicly funded high schools are run at the local level by elected school boards and offer a standardized curriculum or program of study. In almost all public high schools in Canada, boys and girls attend classes together.
Also, public high schools only operate during the day. In most parts of Canada, foreign students can study in English, French, or both. In public high schools, students learn a lot about the country’s culture while receiving the highest level of education possible.
2. Private high schools in Canada
Private high schools in Canada charge tuition and are required to offer the same curriculum as public high schools in the province or state in question. Class sizes in private high schools are usually much smaller than public high schools, but they offer more and more varied extracurricular activities and specialized programs than public high schools.
Private high schools themselves are divided into several different categories and have a lot of variety. Some types of private high schools include:
- Boarding school
- Schools for girls
- Schools for boys
- Religious schools (Catholic, Muslim, etc.)
- Art schools
- military schools
- College
