Washington’s fear of seizing “Iranian oil tankers”
American sources have claimed that the Trump administration considered seizing tankers carrying Iranian oil as one of the options during the negotiations, but has refrained from it for the time being due to the fear of Tehran’s reaction to such an action.
According to RCO News Agency, American officials say that the government of this country intended to seize oil tankers involved in transporting Iranian oil in order to put pressure on Iran during the negotiations, but it has refrained from this action for the time being, fearing “almost certain retaliatory action by Tehran” and its effect on the global oil markets.
The Wall Street Journal writes: “These tankers, which are part of the ‘Shadow Fleet’, help transport oil from several embargoed countries to China and other buyers.”
However, the option of seizing the tankers, which is one of several scenarios being discussed in the White House to force Tehran to reach a deal to curb its nuclear program, faces many obstacles, according to some US officials.
It is stated in this report: “It is possible that in response to the intensification of America’s actions, Iran will seize oil tankers carrying the oil of America’s allies in the region or even mine the Strait of Hormuz, through which 25% of the world’s oil supply passes. “Each of these actions could drastically increase oil prices and create a political crisis for the White House.”
The American media quoted a university professor as saying: “Closing the strait is not in anyone’s interest, but if Iran feels that it is in a bottleneck, it will do so, and logistically, it can afford it.”
He added: “Other Persian Gulf countries will face big challenges in exporting oil and reminded Trump that Iran is not Venezuela.”
