The President of Colombia survived an assassination attempt – Mehr News Agency RCO News Agency
According to Mehr news agency, quoted by Sputnik of Russia, Petro added that his helicopter could not land at its destination on the shores of the Caribbean Sea on Monday evening due to the fear that unknown people wanted to shoot at it.
“We headed out to sea for four hours and ended up in a place where we weren’t supposed to go, to escape death,” he said during the government’s cabinet meeting, which was broadcast live.
Petro’s statements were made in a situation where violence has increased in the country before the presidential elections and Colombia, which has been involved in armed conflicts of various groups for years, is still facing serious challenges.
Colombia’s president, who is constitutionally barred from running for a second term, has indicated that a network of drug traffickers has been trying to assassinate him since he took office in August 2022.
According to him, the alleged conspiracy includes drug lords and warlords, including Ivan Mordisco, who leads the largest breakaway group from the FARC movement since the signing of the 2016 peace and disarmament agreement.
Colombia has a long history of assassinating leftist leaders, including presidential candidates.
Petro, who is the first left-wing president in the history of Colombia, had previously announced another attempt on his life in 2024.
