Russia arrested the third suspect related to the attempt on the life of the top Russian commander
The Federal Security Service of Russia announced on Tuesday that it has arrested the third person suspected of being involved in last week’s unsuccessful attempt on the life of Vladimir Alekseev, the first deputy head of the Intelligence Department of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
According to Isna, Alekseev was shot several times in an apartment in Moscow on Friday morning and was taken to the hospital. According to media reports, he is conscious but still in critical condition.
According to “Moscow Times”, the Federal Security Organization of Russia announced that the newly arrested person, 44-year-old Pavel Vasin, is the son of Viktor Vasin; A person who was arrested shortly after the shooting of Alekseev in Moscow.
According to the Federal Security Service of Russia, in addition to these two people, a person who is the main suspect in the shooting – a Russian citizen born in Ukraine named “Lyubomir Korba” – was arrested in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday and extradited to Russia. It is also said that the fourth person suspected of participating in this assassination plan, a woman named Zinaida Srebritskaya, fled to Ukraine and the Russian police issued an arrest warrant for her.
Pavel Vasin is accused of “providing vehicles to his father and Korba, which were used for surveillance and physical pursuit and for transporting weapons from the hideout.”
In an interrogation video released by Russia’s Federal Security Service, Vasin describes how Korba recruited him last September on behalf of the Ukrainian security service.
He said in this video: “I used to carry out Korba’s missions related to the equipment and take him wherever he said.”
Russia’s Federal Security Service claimed that Vasin was monitoring two other senior Russian military officers for possible future assassinations. His father is also accused of renting an apartment for Kurba and providing him with public transport cards.
Russia’s Federal Security Service claimed earlier this week that Pavel Wasin is a Polish citizen and “played a role in recruiting his father with the help of Polish intelligence services.” Poland has denied this accusation.
The assassination attempt on Alekseev is the latest in a series of domestic attacks against senior military officials. Since December 2024, three commanders have been killed in or near Moscow, the latest of which occurred late last year.
No group has claimed responsibility for the shooting of Alekseev. However, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha denied any role of Kiev and considered this incident to be the result of “internal conflicts in Russia”.
