Internal pressures in Britain for the resignation of the prime minister within a week – Mehr News agency RCO News Agency
According to the Mehr news agency, citing Russia Elium, reports indicate that there is a possibility that the British Prime Minister will resign this week. This issue has been raised in the wake of the scandal related to the appointment of Lord Peter Mandelson as the British ambassador to the United States.
The name of this prominent politician is tied to his friendship with the American billionaire, Jeffrey Epstein, who was involved in the cases of sexual abuse of children.
The scandal previously led to the resignation of Morgan McSweeney, the Prime Minister’s chief of staff, on February 8, 2026. McSweeney designed the election campaign of the Labor Party, which brought the party to power in July 2024.
The crisis escalated when Scotland Yard opened a criminal investigation against Mandelson for allegedly leaking classified government information to Epstein in 2009.
According to the Bloomberg news agency, some Labor MPs are surprised that Starmer will remain as prime minister, as he was responsible for approving Mandelsohn’s appointment.
Some staff in the Prime Minister’s Office are secretly asking members of the government to either resign or resign themselves so that he is forced out of office.
One of the advisors of the ministers assessed the probability of Starmer staying this week as “50/50”.
In this regard, in order to maintain his position, Starmer may take measures such as returning Angela Rainier, his former deputy, to the cabinet after her resignation in September 2025 due to a tax scandal, and also appointing Ed Miliband, the energy security minister, to a high-level ministry to please him.
According to this report, the British Prime Minister’s Office is planning measures to curb the crisis.
Starmer is scheduled to address the Labor faction in the House of Commons on February 9, and will meet separately with the party’s female representatives on February 11. On the first day, he is expected to speak to the public about Mandelsohn’s appointment.
Mandelsohn was appointed ambassador in February 2025 and was dismissed in September of that year after the scandal was revealed.
On 1 February 2026, he announced he was leaving the Labor Party and plans to leave the House of Lords, while the government is considering removing him as a Lord.
It is worth noting that Jeffrey Epstein was arrested in July 2019 on charges of sex trafficking of girls and committed suicide in prison in August of the same year. He left behind a wide network of international relations including prominent global figures.
