European representative: NATO’s negotiation with America over Greenland is treason – Mehr News Agency | RCO News Agency
According to RCO News Agency, quoted by Rashatoudi, Fernand Kartheiser, a member of the European Parliament from Luxembourg, said: “The issue of Greenland has already caused serious damage to the relations between the European Union and the United States.”
He added: North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) Secretary General Mark Rutte’s talks with the US about the future of Greenland are considered a betrayal of the allies.
Earlier, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that Rutte is not in a position to negotiate with the US on behalf of Denmark or Greenland.
He said: We will not give up sovereignty over Greenland, and the future of this region must be defined by its people, and Greenland is a part of Denmark.
On January 17, US President Donald Trump announced that Washington will impose a 10% import tariff on goods imported from England, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, France and Sweden until the parties reach an agreement on the full purchase of Greenland. This decision was supposed to take effect on February 1.
After talking with Mark Rutte, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO), Trump announced that the US will not apply these tariffs because the framework of an agreement is being formed.
According to the Axios news site, the draft agreement proposed by Rutte foresees the maintenance of Danish sovereignty over Greenland and the extension of the 1951 defense agreement; An agreement that allows Washington to establish military bases on the island if NATO recognizes it.
