Rubio: “New Start” will no longer reach its goal – Mehr News Agency | RCO News Agency
According to the Mehr news agency, quoted by Al Jazeera news agency, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio today responded to the positions of the Kremlin and the Russian Foreign Minister regarding the expiration of the “New Start” agreement and announced that the “New Start” agreement will no longer achieve its goal, because it was concluded at a different time to address a different challenge.
The US Secretary of State claimed in this regard: We will set high standards for all potential nuclear powers and we always negotiate from the position of strength. We want to reduce nuclear threats, but we will not accept conditions that harm us.
Marco Rubio then added: China’s ambiguous expansion of its nuclear arsenal would render the bilateral nuclear arms control agreements with Russia obsolete. America understands that negotiating a new treaty as an alternative to Fresh Start will take time, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be attempted. Arms control should not be limited to America and Russia; Other countries are also responsible for strategic stability.
He said: America wants to maintain the potential of powerful, modern and effective nuclear deterrence. The complex nature of the negotiations should not hinder efforts to reduce global nuclear risks.
