According to Heritage Daily; During the construction of an electric vehicle factory in the city of Szeged in Hungary, archaeologists have found a large collection of works belonging to the Avar period. Researchers say that this discovery can rewrite parts of the history of this region.
Experts from the Hungarian National Museum and the Móra Ferenc Museum have announced that they have studied twelve ancie sites, half of which were not known before. In one of these places, a complete cemetery from the early Avar period has been discovered, which, according to archaeologists, is unprecedeed in terms of the preservation and health of the works.
Gold and silver ornames including tiny and iricate earrings, beaded necklaces and decorated belts have been found in women’s graves. Some men were also buried with weapons such as swords, bows and spears, and the remains of horses were seen in some tombs, reflecting the warrior and riding culture of the Avars.
One of the skulls shows signs of battle wounds, providing rare evidence of armed conflict during the period. Also, finding Byzaine objects among the works shows the connection of this society with the wars of the Avars and the Byzaine Empire.
Researchers say that since this cemetery has been ideified with complete demarcation, it is possible to investigate the eire population of that community, and this issue is rarely seen in studies related to the migration period of ethnic groups. Archaeological work in this area coinues and researchers expect to make more discoveries as the project progresses and infrastructure is developed.
According to experts, these findings can provide a new look at the Avar period in Ceral Europe and transform the historical concept of this period for years to come.
