Egypt assumed the one-month presidency of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union – Mehr News agency RCO News Agency
According to Mehr news agency, citing Turkey’s Anatolia news agency, Egypt’s foreign ministry announced that Egypt’s presidency of the African Union Peace and Security Council will begin on February 1.
According to a statement from Egypt’s foreign ministry, Egypt has replaced the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which held the presidency of the council in January. The focus of Egypt’s priorities in this period will be on resolving the ongoing conflicts in the African continent.
The Peace and Security Council of the African Union, established in 2003, is responsible for the implementation of the decisions of the African Union and the prevention and resolution of conflicts. This council consists of 15 countries, five countries are elected every three years and 10 countries are elected every two years. Egypt signed the protocol establishing the Council in March 2004.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the leadership of this council in the current sensitive situation coincides with the complex security, political and development challenges in the African continent and regional and international conditions, and requires cooperation and synergy to deal with these challenges.
During its presidency of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, Egypt will emphasize on strengthening the effectiveness of this Council and develop peace, security and governance structures in Africa with a comprehensive approach to help resolve conflicts and promote security and stability in the continent.
Egypt will also emphasize compliance with the principles and standards of the African Union Charter, including respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries, maintaining national institutions and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.
