It is said that the first attempts to build a tomb for Hafez go back to the period of Mirza Abul Qasim Gorkani (then ruler of Fars). During the Safavid and Afshariya periods, Hafez’s tomb was preserved in the same form and image as before, and only this place was renovated several times. But in the Zandiyeh period, parts were added to the Hafiziya so that the architecture would be closer to the form we know it today.

During this period, a hall with 4 stone columns was built in front of Hafiziyah. Also, a green garden was considered for the tomb, and Karim Khan Zand ordered that a marble stone be placed on the tomb of Lasan al-Ghaib. This stone is still on the tomb of Hafez and very beautiful poems of this great poet were engraved by a person named Haj Aghasi Bey Afshar Azarbaijani with Nastaliq script. These engravings also belong to the Zandiyeh period.

From that time to the Pahlavi period, many people have tried to restore and improve Hafez’s tomb. One of the people was Mullah Shahjahan Zoroastrian, who visited Khawaja Shirazi in 1317 AH and developed a special devotion to this famous poet. In this way, he decides to build a luxurious court for Hafez’s tomb. This work arouses the anger of one of the demonstrative people of that time and finally, the court that Mullah Shah Jahan built is destroyed.

The shape and image that we know from Hafiziyah today belongs to the Pahlavi period. The current court of Hafez was built in 1314 by a person named Ali Asghar Hekmat (Minister of Education at the time) and based on a design by Andre Godard (French architect). In this reconstruction, the plan that the Zendians had planned for the construction of the tomb remained in force, and 16 more stone columns were added to the middle hall of Hafiziyah. It is said that the current architecture of Hafeziya is a symbol of the world of the kingdom and the dome that is placed on the tomb was designed with the inspiration of the dervish hat.
