Belgian Prime Minister: Europe is not a “slave” of America
In his speech to the parliament of the country, Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Viver called for a stronger and more united Europe after the recent tensions over Greenland and the US position towards its allies.
According to RCO News Agency, the Prime Minister of Belgium also said: “America is stronger, but our honor is not for sale.” We are not slaves.”
According to Anatolia News agency, de Viver also said that recent developments have highlighted Europe’s strategic vulnerabilities and the need to strengthen its independence.
He made the comments after attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where US President Donald Trump announced that a framework for a potential deal including Greenland and the wider Arctic region had been reached.
The Belgian prime minister said Europe had narrowly avoided “a real catastrophe”, adding that the incident should be seen as a wake-up call.
Stating that we Europeans must be ready to face the storms and stand alone, he called for faster progress in defense cooperation, integration of capital markets and increased cooperation mechanisms in the European Union, adding: “Even if not for tomorrow, we must speed up.”
European Union leaders met in Brussels to discuss developments in Washington after tensions over Trump’s interest in Greenland due to its strategic location in the Arctic, rich mineral resources and growing concerns about Russian and Chinese influence in the region.
“Maxim Provot”, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, referring to the recent developments, said that the global dominance of the United States corresponds to the strategic weakness of Europe.
He pointed out that the deployment of European forces in Greenland was wrongly perceived by Washington as an anti-American act and emphasized that this action was aimed at reassuring the United States and addressing Arctic security concerns related to China and Russia.
The senior Belgian diplomat also welcomed Trump’s decision to drop the threat of further tariffs against European countries, calling such actions “unacceptable”.
He also warned that this move could be temporary due to Trump’s “unpredictability”.
The Belgian Foreign Minister also added that the European Union should prepare appropriate response plans, including economic countermeasures if necessary.
