Trump: I may impose tariffs on any country that opposes plans for Greenland
US President Donald Trump warned on Friday that the United States may impose tariffs on any country that does not agree to Washington’s takeover of Greenland.
According to RCO News Agency, in a speech, Trump emphasized the possibility of imposing tariffs on countries opposed to the acquisition of Greenland by the United States and stated that Washington needs this autonomous island for issues related to its national security.
Trump has previously said that he does not trust Denmark to protect Greenland and has reiterated that the island is a US national security issue.
Greenland is a self-governing territory of Denmark. It is the largest island in the world and is located in the center of the Arctic, which is becoming increasingly important due to the melting of ice caused by the climate crisis and the opening of new trade routes.
White House spokeswoman Carolyn Levitt announced on Thursday that technical negotiations between the United States and Denmark have begun regarding the possible purchase of Greenland by Washington. Levitt said in a press release that Wednesday’s meeting between “J. D. Vice President Vance and Danish officials have been constructive on Greenland.
He emphasized that President Donald Trump’s priority is to buy Greenland from Denmark and that this region is of vital importance to the national interests of the United States.
Levitt added that the two sides agreed during the meeting to form a working group to continue technical discussions on the purchase of Greenland. He noted that these meetings will be held every two to three weeks.
Levitt stated that President Trump wants to annex Greenland to the United States and considers it a national security priority. He noted that the plans of some European countries to send troops to Greenland will not affect Trump’s decision.
