Russia’s statement about the seizure of the Marinera ship by the US
The Russian Ministry of Transport confirmed on Wednesday that communication with the “Marinera” oil tanker was lost after the American naval forces boarded this vessel.
According to Isna, the Russian Ministry of Transport announced in a statement: “The US Navy arrived at the vessel at 12:00 GMT on January 7th, and after that the communication with this ship was lost.”
The statement continues: “The Marinera ship had temporarily received a license to sail under the Russian flag on December 24.”
The Russian Ministry of Transport continued: “US military forces boarded the Marinera in open waters, which is against the provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.”
The European Command of the United States announced on Wednesday that it has seized the oil tanker “Marinera”, formerly known as “Bella-1”, in the North Atlantic Ocean.
The seizure of this tanker has been made with the claim of “violation of American sanctions”.
Earlier, a US official told Reuters that the United States was trying to seize the Marinera tanker after more than two weeks of pursuit across the Atlantic Ocean.
The seizure, which could escalate tensions with Russia, came after the tanker, originally known as the Bella-1, passed a US-sanctioned maritime “blockade” of tankers and thwarted attempts by the US Coast Guard to board it.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the operation was being carried out by the US Coast Guard and the US military.
