Spain strongly condemned the violation of international law in Venezuela
Following the US attack on Caracas and the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez strongly condemned the “violation of international law” in this country.
According to RCO News Agency, Sanchez wrote in a letter to the Socialist Workers Party of Spain on the occasion of New Year greetings: “The recent violation of international law in Venezuela – an action that we strongly condemn – as well as the suffering of the people of Ukraine and Palestine, reminds us how important it is to have a government in Spain that always and everywhere defends international law and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.”
According to Anatolia News agency, this position was raised after his statement on Saturday, in which he refused to recognize the American intervention.
Sanchez wrote on the X social network: “Spain did not recognize the Maduro regime, but it will not recognize any intervention that violates international law and pushes the region to the horizon of uncertainty and tension.”
US President Donald Trump invaded Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, on Saturday in an illegal invasion called “Operation Absolute Resolve” and arrested Nicolás Maduro and his wife and transferred them to New York. Several members of the US Congress called the operation “illegal”, while the US government promised that Maduro would be brought to justice.
Venezuela’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced its intention to appeal Washington’s actions to international organizations and called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
Russia also expressed its solidarity with Venezuela. The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed its deep concern over the reports about the forced transfer of Maduro and his wife to Caracas during the US invasion and demanded their release. Moscow also emphasized the need to take measures to prevent further escalation of tensions around Venezuela.
