Mertes: The war in Ukraine can reach Germany
In his New Year’s speech, the German Chancellor warned that the war in Ukraine is not far from Germany, and considered Russia’s actions as a threat not only to Ukraine, but to the freedom and security of the whole of Europe.
According to Isna, German Chancellor Friedrich Mertes claimed that Russia did not wage war against Ukraine only, but “this aggression is part of the Kremlin’s plan against other European countries.”
Deutsche Welle News agency reported: In his New Year’s address to German citizens, Schultz noted that the war between Russia and Ukraine is not far from Germany.
The German chancellor said: “Russia continues its war of aggression against Ukraine with unrelenting violence. “For the fourth year in a row, Ukrainians will celebrate New Year’s Eve in the most unfavorable conditions – many without electricity, under fire from rockets and fearing the fate of friends and relatives.”
He added that this war directly threatens the freedom and security of not only Germany, but all of Europe.
Speaking about the increase in defense spending and the new system of military service in Germany, the German chancellor said: “I know that many citizens are worried about peace because of the uncertainty in our world. I tell you: we take care of our security.”
Mertes’ statements were made after the announcement of a drone attack by Ukraine on the Russian President’s residence in the middle of the US talks with Kiev about Washington’s peace initiative has escalated tensions between the parties.
Moscow, which considered this alleged act as a turning away from peace in Ukraine, promised that its retaliatory attack against government buildings in Kiev would come at the right time.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has denied such an attack by its armed forces. All the mentioned attack drones were intercepted and did not leave any damage.
Negotiations between the United States and Ukraine regarding Washington’s peace plan, which includes limiting the Ukrainian army, abandoning the country’s approved request to join the NATO alliance, establishing a demilitarized zone in the important strategic and industrial province of Donbas, handing over some areas under Russian control to Moscow, and providing security guarantees similar to NATO to Ukraine, have not resulted in tangible results, despite the progress that has been made.
Until now, Ukraine has announced that it is willing to withdraw its forces from the front line on the condition that Russia does the same in order to form a demilitarized zone and to give up joining NATO in exchange for security guarantees.
