Ukraine’s accession to the European Union is a key security guarantee for Kyiv
European Commission President Ursula von Derlein said on Tuesday that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union would be “a key security guarantee” for Kyiv.
According to RCO News Agency, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on December 24 that he has received the support of the United States to set a clear timetable for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union; The realization of which still needs the approval of the European Union.
After meeting with EU leaders in Brussels, Von Derlein wrote on X social network: “Today we had a good conversation with European leaders about our support for Ukraine, its security and the reconstruction of the country. Ultimately, the prosperity of a free Ukrainian state lies in joining the European Union. This in itself is also a key security guarantee. Accession is not only for the benefit of the countries that become members; As the successive waves of expansion of the Union have shown, the whole of Europe benefits from it.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned in November that giving permission for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union could destabilize the entire bloc and put a burden on its members.
Zakharova added that Kiev uses the rhetoric of EU integration to “stay afloat” domestically, while Ukraine does not meet any of the main criteria for membership.
Several EU member states, including Poland and Hungary, have opposed Kyiv’s immediate accession to the bloc.
