The decision of the US Marine Corps to purchase 10,000 FPV drones
Referring to operational experiences in the field of reconnaissance and precision attacks in the war in Ukraine, the US Marine Corps announced that it plans to purchase 10,000 affordable FPV drones to increase the operational capability of its forces.
According to RCO News Agency, the US Marine Corps is planning to purchase 10,000 FPV drones, each of which will be sold at a price of less than $4,000.
The War Zone News site reported: The marine unit aims to significantly increase the tactical capabilities of infantry units at the battalion and company level and considers FPV drones as a low-cost but very effective tool for reconnaissance and precision attacks.
The technical requirements specify the maximum flight range up to 20 km.
The $4,000 figure is a suggested price cap and does not include additional equipment such as ground control stations, FPV goggles, batteries, or Swarm (group flight) coordinated operation systems.
A key requirement is that drones must be designed so simply that soldiers can adapt them to carry combat payloads.
The change and repair should be done using standard tools and without the involvement of manufacturers, so that it is possible to quickly recover the equipment directly inside the military units.
The US Marine Corps emphasized that these requirements were formed after a careful study of Ukraine’s experience in using FPV drones.
Ukrainian forces’ methods have been noted, particularly their ability to autonomously modify drones in field conditions, adapt power systems, and improve strike capabilities, effectively turning civilian technologies into powerful weapons.
The US Army is currently actively expanding the use of drones at the battalion and company level. Forces repair and assemble drones directly within their units to better understand their operational details.
The US plans to increase the production and use of low-cost drones to maintain its superiority in the battlefield.
