Orban: Financial aid to Ukraine weakens the European Union
The Prime Minister of Hungary said that sending military and financial aid to Ukraine would weaken the European Union instead of strengthening it.
According to RCO News Agency, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Saturday evening: “Today, the problem is that with every new decision, instead of strengthening ourselves, we weaken ourselves.”
According to “Tass” News agency, the Prime Minister of Hungary emphasized: “Ukraine does not add any power to Europe, it only destroys it.”
Orban said that Europe should not finance the Ukrainian army: “We should not strengthen Ukraine, but we should strengthen the army of the countries located in the west of Ukraine.” We must strengthen the armies of European countries for Europe.
He reminded that during the European Union summit on December 18 and 19 in Brussels, it was decided to grant a military loan to Ukraine in 2026-2027 instead of a joint European loan worth 90 billion euros.
In the last four years, the European Union has allocated 180 billion euros to Kyiv, bringing the total European aid to Ukraine to 270 billion euros.
Unlike many EU member states, Hungary has rejected sending any lethal weapons to Ukraine and is focused on a peaceful solution to the war.
This country has also repeatedly criticized the European Union’s sanctions against Russia, and its prime minister has described the said sanctions and restrictions as a “failure” that only worsens the energy crisis.
