Trump reclassified marijuana to loosen federal restrictions
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday, according to which marijuana will be moved to a lower category in the drug classification; A move that loosens federal restrictions on the substance without legalizing it at the federal level.
According to Isna, according to this decree, marijuana is transferred from the list of “Schedule One substances” – which is dedicated to substances with a high potential for abuse and with no known medical use – to “Schedule Three”; A category that indicates it has a lower risk of abuse and may have some medical benefits.
This measure is a great victory for the broad movement of marijuana legalization; A movement that gained momentum in the last decade with many states voting to legalize the medical and recreational use of marijuana.
In this regard, Trump said: “I want to emphasize that the order I am about to sign does not in any way mean the legalization of marijuana and does not allow its recreational use in any way.”
He added that he still advises his children to stay away from all addictive substances, including alcohol and cigarettes. Despite his opposition to the recreational use of marijuana, Trump believes that medical marijuana can have legitimate uses if prescribed and used carefully.
“In some cases, if carefully prescribed, marijuana can have legitimate medical uses,” Trump said.
He added, “This reclassification order will make it much easier to conduct medical research related to marijuana, allowing us to explore potential benefits, risks, and future treatments.”
Earlier this week, in a similar tone, Trump mentioned the possibility of expanding research on medical marijuana as a justification for issuing this executive order.
The US President also talked about Russia’s war with Ukraine at the ceremony of signing the executive order regarding marijuana and said that he believes they are close to reaching a conclusion about the war in Ukraine.
He said: “We have a chance to end the war in Ukraine in the short term. I hope the Ukrainians act faster; “Because every time Kiev delays, Russia changes its mind.”
The US President also stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to meet with him, but he has not yet set a time for such a meeting.
