Orban’s letter to Putin about confiscation of Russian assets
The Prime Minister of Hungary asked the reaction of the President of Russia to the possible decision of the European Union to use the frozen assets of this country.
According to Isna, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on the plane on the way to Brussels: “I have written a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and in it I have asked about Russia’s reaction to the possible decision of the European Union to use Russian assets for a compensation loan to Ukraine, whether Putin will consider the positions of the member states.”
According to “Ukrainska Pravda” News media, the Prime Minister of Hungary emphasized: “I received a response from the President of Russia, which shows that the reaction of this country will be strong and will take into account the positions of the member states in this matter.”
Orban reiterated that Hungary does not support the use of frozen Russian assets in the EU, as this would represent a “new level of escalation”.
He also wrote on the X social network: “The European Union has taken away Hungary’s rights and violated the principle of loyal cooperation in the matter of sanctions, and I do not consider the principles of loyal cooperation binding on Hungary.”
On December 12, EU ambassadors approved a decision to freeze Russian assets in Europe indefinitely, and Viktor Orban criticized this decision.
Unlike many EU member states, Hungary has rejected sending any lethal weapons to Ukraine and is focused on a peaceful solution to the war.
This country has also repeatedly criticized the European Union’s sanctions against Russia, and its prime minister has described the said sanctions and restrictions as a “failure” that only worsens the energy crisis.
