Von der Leyen: Europe must be responsible for its own security
The head of the European Commission demanded that the continent be responsible for its own security.
According to RCO News Agency, Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, said in a speech today (Wednesday) that Europe should be responsible for its own security.
According to Reuters, von der Leyen emphasized this issue in a speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg: “Such work is no longer an option. Rather, it is a necessity.”
This senior official of the European Commission, noting that “Europe cannot allow others to define its worldview”, continued: “The US government’s national security strategy document correctly stated that Europe’s share of global GDP is declining, but the United States is also on the same path.”
According to “Guardian”, the European Union leaders will hold the last stage of their negotiations today before the meeting of the European Council tomorrow (Thursday) with the aim of considering and deciding on the use of seized assets of Russia to give a compensation loan to Ukraine.
According to reports, while there are 24 hours left until tomorrow’s meeting, these leaders have not yet reached an agreement in this regard. In the meantime, the Belgian government continues to oppose this proposal of the European Commission because it is worried about the consequences and possible legal challenges that may arise for it from the Russian side. The latest reports indicate that the agreement is getting out of reach and the number of countries that have doubts about this action is increasing, and now Italy has joined them.
Von der Leyen said while opening today’s negotiations in the European Parliament: “There is nothing more important in the field of European defense provision than defense support to Ukraine.” “The coming days will play a decisive role in reaching an agreement in this regard.”
“We have to decide what direction we’re going to take,” he said. But one position is quite clear. “We have to decide at this meeting of the European Council about supporting Ukraine in the next 2 years.”
