Announcement of “Zelensky’s” readiness to give up joining NATO – Mehr News Agency | RCO News Agency
According to Mehr news agency, citing Sputnik, the American newspaper Financial Times reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he is ready to give up his demand for NATO membership in exchange for receiving security guarantees from the United States and Europe, and this action is done with the aim of advancing peace negotiations in the talks in Berlin on Sunday.
According to the report of the Financial Times, Zelensky said, referring to this issue: “We are talking about bilateral security guarantees between Ukraine and the United States of America, that is, guarantees similar to Article 5, as well as security guarantees for us from our European partners and other countries such as Canada, Japan and others.”
Zelensky also claimed: This is a compromise at the moment.
These statements of Zelenskiy come despite the fact that Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman of the Kremlin, said earlier: the guarantee mechanism should be defined not only for security, but also for the implementation of peace agreements.
The Russian president has repeatedly emphasized that Moscow is completely against Ukraine joining NATO.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently announced that Ukraine’s adherence to neutrality and non-nuclear status is still one of the conditions for resolving the conflict.
